The Lipizzaner horse breed is closely associated with the Spanish Riding School, and are well-known for being trained in difficult haute école dressage, such as ‘the airs above the ground’, flying change, pirouette, passage, piaff, and counter-canter.

Most Lipizzaners are grey. This colour was preferred by the royal family, so the breed was selectively bred so that the majority of horses today are grey. But due to long-standing tradition, the Spanish Riding School always has one bay Lipizzan stallion in residence.
